COLORADO SPRINGS — A young boy battling cancer is now a sworn police officer.
Tuesday morning a special ceremony was held to swear Joshua Salmoiraghi in as a officer with the Colorado Springs police department.
He was presented with a badge and toy police car after taking the non-tradtional oath.
"I Joshua Salmoiraghi promise to be a good citizen listen to my mom and dad and be kind to others. I promise to eat my vegetables, hug my parents, share my toys with my brothers. I will be brave. I will always remember that I am loved by many and I am now a member of the Colorado Springs police department family."
Joshua was diagnosed with Stage IV Kidney Cancer (Wilm's Tumor) on Father's Day weekend last year at age three. The tumor spread to his abdomen lymph nodes and his lungs.
They tumor and his left kidney were removed and he underwent radiation therapy to his abdomen and chemotherapy. In December he was in remission, but in mid-January a tumor was discovered in left lung.
Later this week Joshua will start a new six-month regimen of chemotherapy, which will be much stronger and more aggressive.
"We just want to thank you so much for doing this," said Joseph Salmoiraghi, Joshua's father. "This was a surprise to us, a shock . We're nervous but he's brave."
His mother, Amanda is a Major in the USAF stationed at Peterson AFB. The family just moved here in March from Los Angeles, CA. His father, Joseph is a disabled veteran and a Pastor. Hist two older brothers, Benjamin and Timothy attend Stetson Elementary.
