CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Under damp, rainy skies, the casket of Rev. Billy Graham returned home to Charlotte for the final time.
The day began in Washington, D.C. where the Graham family watched as a military ceremonial unit carried the casket down the steps to a waiting hearse.
Thousands of people had passed by the casket in the Rotunda late into Wednesday night, paying final respects to the man who grew up on a dairy farm off of Park Road and went on to become one of the most significant religious figures of the century.
In Charlotte, at the Billy Graham Library, Dr. Don Wilton, the personal Pastor to Billy Graham, watched as the hearse pulled into the driveway after the flight from Washington, D.C.
Earlier this week, Wilton talked about what the death of Billy Graham meant to him.
“You know I’ve lost a very dear dear friend and a man that I had the privilege of spending many years in a very private and personal way with.”
Meantime work continued on the tent in the Library parking lot where the funeral will be held.
The tent is nearly as long as a football field and will have seats for the 2,300 invited guests.
President trump and Vice President Pence will attend the service that will begin Friday at noon.
