Charlotte firefighters climb 110 stairs to honor 9/11 first responders

This week, the nation will remember the 2,000-plus people who died during the 9/11 attacks.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This week, the entire country will remember the 2,000-plus people who died during the 9/11 attacks.

On Saturday, nearly 800 first responders gathered in uptown Charlotte to honor the first responders who sacrificed their lives to save others at the World Trade Center.

"They gave selflessly they went into the burning buildings and gave their lives just to save a few they could," said one local first responder.

They climbed 110 flights of stairs at the Duke Energy Center to remember the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and 10 emergency medical responders who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Some of the first responders were spotted carrying gear that weighed nearly 100 pounds, just like the FDNY firefighters did.
