YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- A home surveillance video caught two cars zooming down a residential road.
It happened late Friday night in Fort Mill.
“How no one was coming down the street at that time is beyond me,” Jennifer said.
She posted the video to Facebook, as an urgent plea for help.
“We saw two cars side by side drag racing up A.O. Jones Boulevard towards Starlight,” she recalled.
Street racers caught reaching dangerously fast speeds feet from her front porch and Jennifer said the problem’s been picking up in the past few years.
“How fast do you think they were going?" asked NBC Charlotte's Rachel Brown.
"I would say at least 70 mph or more," Jennifer responded.
And what’s the speed limit on this street?
"25 mph,” Jennifer said.
This time, no one was hurt. Neighbors, however, fear their luck is running on empty. Jennifer also worries her two kids and other children will get hurt if nothing is done to put a stop to the illegal game.
"What’s your biggest fear?" asked Rachel Brown.
"That they will get hit and killed, that one of the cars will lose control," Jennifer said. "They will end up on someone’s lawn or through someone’s side of the house.”
She said there have been accidents as well as neighbors’ pets getting hit and killed.
“People in this neighborhood are fed up, frustrated and scared,” she said.
Speed bumps and stops signs along the stretch have been repeatedly denied. Now, neighbors ache for a permanent traffic control solution.
“It would be an awful shame to do something after the fact as oppose to doing something preventative,” Jennifer explained.
The York County Sheriff’s Office said they are aware of the issue. They told me they set up a patrol in the area.
They are asking homeowners call 911 or their nonemergency line 803-628-3056 to report these racers. Deputies are requesting descriptions of the vehicles and license plate information if you are in a position to get that.
