Man says someone torched his Corvette because he's gay

Torched tires, charred rims and a smoldering V8 engine are all you can make of what used to be Seth Headley's 1992 Corvette. The 27-year-old said his roommate frantically woke him up around 5 a.m. telling him his car was engulfed.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NBC Charlotte has obtained surveillance video of man's dream car going up in flames, and police are calling it a case of arson.

Seth Headley said he awoke Wednesday morning to the devastating sight, and he's hoping the video will help catch the person responsible. He believed he was targeted because he's gay.

"We come outside, and I'm bewild. I have no idea what's on fire," said Seth Headley.

Torched tires, charred rims and a smoldering V8 engine are all you can make of what used to be Headley's 1992 Corvette. The 27-year-old said his roommate frantically woke him up around 5 a.m. telling him his car was engulfed.

"The moment that I came out, within two to five minutes, the fire trucks started pulling up, and then they started fighting it, and this is when the flames were extremely large," Headley said.

At first, it seemed random, but a check of Headley's home surveillance video revealed a man igniting the car and leaving in a truck.

"He literally came down the hill with his lights off. He was then looking like he was going to pass the house, but its like something caught his attention to the left. It could've been the pride flag," said Headley.

He estimated a few minutes later the man returned to light up the rear of the car.

"He just literally stuck whatever it was and just put it right there and held it and it just...you can see on the camera, it just sparks everywhere. I don't know what he was using to do it," Headley said.

Headley believes his LGBTQ decals on the car and a gay pride flag on his home motivated the crime.

"It's 2018, so if it is because of my lifestyle, it's time to grow up. You know, we're a community, we live in the city together. It's time to grow up and actually be civil with one another," said Headley.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating the crime as an arson.
