SPENCER, North Carolina — Interstate 85 northbound in Rowan County was closed Tuesday evening because of a vehicle fire, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The lanes were closed near Spencer. The vehicle fire appears to have occurred between the exits for Andrews Street / Old Union Church Road and Long Ferry Road. Northbound delays stretched back through Salisbury to at least East Innes Street.
Northbound drivers could use North Long Street or U.S. Route 29 as a detour.
The South Salisbury Fire Department posted on X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter, that they were among the emergency agencies on the scene.
The three right lanes at the exit to Andrews Street were eventually reopened around 6 p.m.
It was not immediately known if anyone was injured or how many vehicles may have been involved.
