North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a detour was set up, but they warned drivers should avoid the area if possible.

Drivers heading east can exit I-40 and follow U.S. 70 to Claremont. They can then turn onto North Oxford Street and rejoin I-40 past the crash location.

The road finally reopened around 3:30 p.m.
