Flooding could bring explosion of mosquitoes across the Carolinas

Residents and doctors brace for an increase in the mosquito population and other hidden heath concerns caused by Florence.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Time is running out before an explosion of mosquitoes across the Carolinas. With all the rain and all the standing water experts are warning us about a wave of bites and sickness potentially coming our way.

"More available mosquitoes that are out biting they're going to be more aggressive looking for food services looking for people to bite looking for blood," said Patrick Helms, a technician at Mosquito Authority.

Florence is gone, but the painful sting will be felt for weeks. Mosquito companies already answering the calls for help. Patrick Helms at Mosquito Authority is bracing for a big boost in business.

"We're going to feel residual effects from this for sometime," said Helms. "At least until the temperature drops off and that could be at least another month away."

Families across the Carolinas are fully aware of the big problem small insects can pose. Companies like Sickweather are capitalizing on Florence. They have a SMS text-based Health Alert System that aids in diagnosing trending illnesses when disaster strikes.

Local doctors are now drawing attention to hidden health concerns from Florence.

"There are things in the water that can cause skin irritation especially if you have open wounds or cuts," said Dr. Monique May, Director of Concentra Urgent Care.

Hundreds of homes have also been impacted, but to add insult to injury how you go about clean-up efforts could also be a problem.

"Things like upholstery, walls and carpeting get wet that's perfect for growth of mold, mildew and even certain types of fungi," said May.

Doctors also warn about mental health issues following such a catastrophic event. Officials say some survivors may suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
