Power struggle is real across Carolinas after Florence

Power companies and tree removal businesses are struggling to keep up with the demand.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As utility trucks rush to restore power the power struggle is real for families across the Carolinas. Power outages are still a problem in our viewing area. Thousands of people are still without power in Mecklenburg County.

"We said 50/50 chance not to lose and we lost," said Abraham Shiraz, a Cotswold resident. "This is the first time I have a generator."

Several families in the Cotswold community have been without power since Friday. The sound of generators buzzing at night is a common one.

"It was off when I came home from work Friday," said Kathy Dalton, a Charlotte resident. "It came back on around 8:30 Friday night. Went back off around 10 on Sunday and just literally came back on."

Duke Energy estimates that power will be restored in Cleveland and Lincoln Counties Tuesday. However, power will not be restored for Mecklenburg, Gaston and Cabarrus Counties until Wednesday.

"Been driving all around and said there were crews everywhere," said Marylou Smith, a Madison Park resident.

As utility workers race to restore power, tree companies are hustling to keep up with the demand.

"Every tree service in Charlotte is currently involved in the clean up of debris from Hurricane Florence," said Don Gardner, owner of Arbora Tree Care.
