CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Julie Kay joined the WCNC Charlotte team as a general assignment reporter in August 2024.

She’s excited to be back in the South after spending a year at WZZM in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she was a weekend morning anchor and reporter.

As a military brat, Julie has lived all over, from Monterey, California, to St. Louis, Missouri. However, the Carolinas feel like home, as she was born on Fort Liberty and spent many years in Greenville, South Carolina.

Julie is a proud graduate of the University of Missouri (M-I-Z!). When the COVID-19 pandemic hit her freshman year, she took a job at the local NBC affiliate, KOMU 8 News. In her nearly four years there, she worked as a producer, reporter, and eventually weekend evening anchor. Her investigative piece on statewide Missouri book bans earned a Hearst Journalism Award. She also spent a summer in New York City interning for the TODAY Show.

Julie often gravitates towards stories involving politics and numbers—anything that requires some digging. She can’t wait to get to know the Queen City and what matters most to its communities.

When she’s not at work, you can find her reading, drinking coffee, hanging out with her cat Louie, and forcing everyone she knows to listen to Taylor Swift.
