Festival in the Park celebrates a special 60th anniversary

In 1964, the festival was only one of a handful of outdoor festivals in the United States, even the world!

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Festival in the Park is a major part of the history of Charlotte. It all started 60 years ago when Charlotte Chamber of Commerce president John Belk believed the Queen City needed a big, outdoor art show.

An event like this happening outdoors was a rarity at the time in the United States, even across the world. But it became a reality! Local insurance executive Grant Whitney put the plan into motion, with Freedom Park as the backdrop for the festival.

The 98-acre park features a beautiful lake at its heart and is just three miles from Uptown Charlotte, while also being near the historic Dilworth area and Myers Park neighborhood.

The original Festival in the Park soon became the blueprint for outdoor art festivals across the country and globally. The free event brings all sorts of neighbors together to discover arts and crafts and taste cuisine from dozens of food vendors. A variety of family fun and music is also a key feature!

Festival in the Park always happens rain or shine, albeit with one exception: when hurricane Hugo slammed the Carolinas and the festival! That was the only time the Festival in the Park was shut down. Plus, the festival has only seen six rain days in the last six decades.
