BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Visitors will have a chance to visit the mostly defunct “Land of Oz” theme park at Beech Mountain in June.

The park will open Fridays in June with tours taking place at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m., according to its website.

The park opened in June of 1970 with large crowds the first summer, making it a leading attraction in the Southeast. The park remained opened for 10 years, but economic issues and new theme parks to compete against forced the owners to close in 1980.

Tickets cost $12.50 plus a $10 round-trip lift ticket and online tickets go on sale the Monday before each tour.

"It's magical. You walk through there, and even us as volunteers, you walk down through there and you can feel the magic." said volunteer Wayne Wineager. "And we hope they walk away with that special feeling that Dorothy had when she walked the yellow brick road, because it brings out the kid inside. That's exactly what it is. It brings out the kid in them."
