CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It's time for school age kids to celebrate! Summer break is here. The good news for parents, it's not too late to make plans for summer camps. Charlotte nonprofit Arts plus is joining us today to tell us more about their summer programs.
Today Wes Smith and Marissa Keener from Arts plus. “It’s not too late to make plans for summer camps” says Smith. He adds “Charlotte nonprofit Arts+ is here to help, with summer programming options for ages 4-18 that run weekly starting next week (June 17-August 16).” The art and music options are numerous, and space is available for popular offerings like Art, Band, Orchestra, and Discovering Ukulele programs, but are filling quickly. Camps cover a range of topics that encourage creativity and artistic exploration, and they are designed to hold the interest of students in every age group.
Band 101 (grades 6-8) and Orchestra 101 (grades 5-8), hosted at Northwest School of the Arts (415 Beatties Ford Rd.), are camps for students who are interested in joining their school band or orchestra but don’t have experience playing an instrument.
Arts+ summer camps allow students to grow and develop their skills and offer connection with other Charlotte musicians and artists. Arts+ also offers String Orchestra Camp (grades K-12) and Band Camp (grades 6-12) for more experienced musicians. Young musicians can also discover the Ukulele in our In Discovering Ukulele (Grades 2-6) program.
Students will learn simple chords and strumming patterns, read ukulele tablature, and play basic melodies. “I love to see the smiles on kid’s faces in our 101 program when they learn how to take care of their instrument and comprehend how beautiful music is” says Keener. Camps and classes are located across Charlotte to better serve families, including the Arts+ Uptown location inside Ascend (601 E. 5th St., Ste. 230) and Do Greater Charlotte (2400 Greenland Ave.). Longtime partner Park Road Baptist Church (3900 Park Rd.) will host the Discovering camps and a new VA Youth Camp. For more information and to register, visit artsplus.org.
