Boosting your mental health at work

Managing stress and depression at work

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A staggering number of employees grapple with mental health challenges, with conditions like anxiety and depression being particularly prevalent.  

Here with some steps to help combat the issue is Career Coach, Cassandra Whitlow. 

Studies indicate that approximately one in five adults experience a mental health condition in a given year, and many of these individuals are employed. 

Moreover, the economic impact of mental health problems is substantial, with billions of dollars lost annually due to decreased productivity, absenteeism, and turnover.  

“About 76% of employees report experiencing moderate to high levels of stress, with workload being a primary stressor” says Whitlow.  She adds “Employees with good mental health tend to be more resilient, creative, and collaborative, contributing to increased job satisfaction and organizational success.”

Here are effective strategies to supercharge your mental health at work and propel you toward a positive, fulfilling path.

1) Reclaim your break!!!

Leave the building or leave your home for lunch; better yet, meet up with a friend for lunch. Set reminders to take breaks throughout the day. You can use these breaks to stretch, go for a walk, or do some deep breathing exercises. You can also try turning off your email or only checking it at certain times of the day.

2) Set boundaries - “No” Button is needed

Know your limits and communicate them to your colleagues and supervisors. You can also try saying no to additional tasks and only working on projects that belong to you. Stop doing those administrative tasks that may be irrelevant or no longer needed.

3) Set up a getaway

It could be camping with friends or a trip to the tropics. The act of planning a vacation and having something to look forward to can boost your overall happiness for up to 8 weeks!

4) Create a view with Art & Nature

Creating and viewing art help reduce anxiety and stress and adding greenery to your space and getting out in nature improves your mood, lowers cortisol levels, and enhances overall well-being.

5) Sufficient sleep

Prioritize quality sleep for optimal cognitive function. The benefits of sleep include a balanced Mood,  improved concentration and memory, mental clarity, Lower stress hormones, enhanced resilience, reduced risk of depression and anxiety, better decision making and increased patience.  It is vitality important that you get sleep your mental health and job depends on it.
