This September 4th thru Oct 27th the Mint Museum is excited to bring Communion of the White Dresses to the Queen City.
The concept for the show coming together thanks to a collaborative effort between Jaki Shelton Green and Monique Luck. The exhibit is an interactive, artistic poetic installation, that uses the words from Green’s poem The Communion of White Dresses.
According to the museum's website: the exhibition reimagines the tradition, symbolism, and representation of white dresses, exploring their intersection with the generational culture of white dresses and the black female body politic.
On today's show we heard from Jaki Shelton Green (North Carolina Poet Laureate), Monique Luck (International Artist and Muralist), and Dr. Jen Sudul Edwards (Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art for the Mint Museum). “We are so excited to bring this installation to the public here in the Carolinas” says Dr. Edwards. She continues “the space where the installation is housed is there for the sole intent of helping the artist have a place and a voice to showcase their work.”
“I wrote the piece because I wanted to make a statement and observation how we view white dresses and memories that are evoked from this imagery” says Shelton-Green. She adds “behind every White Dress there is a story and a narrative that speaks volumes."
Luck adding “it was fortuitous that we met and our organic collaboration resulted in an installations that challenges, inspires and transport the viewer into the stories behind the White Dresses.”
Come see and enjoy an installation that takes you on a journey. Meet the artist and get ready to be wowed! The event is free. There will be a reading of the poem, an artist talk and a dance performance at the venue. Here are the details:
