Many Americans of all ages suffer from hearing loss. On today's show we spoke with Dr. Daniel Morrison.

Morrison is an Otolaryngologist at Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates.  His subspecialty expertise in otology/neurotology. Morrison's clinical interests include medical and surgical disorders of the ear including ear infections, acoustic neuromas, adult and pediatric hearing loss, complex vertigo disorders, facial nerve disorders, and congenital ear anomalies.

Not being able to hear or struggling to hear can be frustrating and it is a potential disadvantage in society. We learned at CEENTA Southpark, they specialize in hearing loss and can help you get back onto the road to hearing clearly.

“If you are experiencing ringing or buzzing in the ear you may have hearing loss” says Dr. Morrison. He adds "having to frequently turn up the volume of your TV or phone can indicate that your hearing is not as strong as it was before. If you think people are mumbling or talking way too soft...like in a whisper... you may have hearing loss, or feel frustrated every time you're speaking with someone and can’t quite make out what they are saying then you may be experiencing hearing loss.  If you are avoiding social situations you may be experiencing hearing loss."  He continues "they're can be many different levels of hearing loss, it may even be hereditary or genetic.” Morrison also shared:  "Hearing loss can be caused by infection. when viruses or bacteria get caught in the middle ear as a result."

It is good practice to get your hearing checked out. The good news is, there are different treatment options that can help alleviate the problem many older adults and young children face.

“The Cochlear ear implant is a treatment option bound to add clarity of sound for the individual” says Dr. Morrison. Cochlear implants are devices that provide electrical stimulation to the cochlear nerve, which helps the patient hear.

Unlike a hearing aid, part of the cochlear implant is placed inside the cochlea, which stimulates the cochlear nerve that leads to the auditory cortex in the brain. Cochlear implants consist of an external piece and an internal piece. The internal portion of the device is implanted into the cochlea during a two- or three-hour surgical procedure.

Four weeks later, the external piece (known as the sound processor) is programmed and placed on the head in order to send information to the internal component. Cochlear implants are available to people of all ages, including babies who have significant hearing loss and limited access to traditional hearing aids. Hearing loss has a significant impact on a child’s life, particularly the development of their speech and language, which in turn significantly impacts their social and academic success.
