CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This morning, as our countdown to the Olympics continued - we were joined by Carol Lawrence, Head Coach of Track and Field at Johnson C Smith University.
She is the former coach of one of the top runners in the country Anna Cockrell. “I have the privilege of coaching one of the greatest hurdlers to come out of the state of North Carolina” says Coach Lawrence. She adds” I think of her more as a daughter than a hurdler.”
Anna Cockrell has made her second Olympics and will be competing among the best of the best in 2024 Paris, France. The talent pool in the Olympics will feature Olympic gold medalist and world record holder at that distance Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone and world class competitor Femke Bol. “First of all Sydney is a track prodigy and I’m glad to play just a small part in Anna’s Story and to see so much growth and maturity in her. My time as high school coach has been rewarding as many of my athletes have won state Championships like Spearmen Twins and Cardwell; incidentally, they have gone on to have great college careers.”
As Coach Lawrence prepares to watch her former athlete compete she has focused her attention on her current athletes at JCSU. Johnson C Smith University is getting prepared for their own 2024 campaign in track and field. “We have a very good team which is not afraid of hard work.” She adds “I think the future is bright for our athletes and our school.” “I also changed some athletes positionally to help the team win.” “My athletes have bought in!” You can follow the journey of JCSU track and field team on Instagram @JCSU_TFX.
