If you've always wanted to grow houseplants but have little to no natural light in your home, don't worry – you can grow plants too! There are tons of plants that thrive in low light. Joining us today on the show, with all the details from Pike Nursery was Oza Devang. “Low Light is generally the most difficult situation to grow plants in, it’s not impossible, you just need the right plants” says Oza. He continues “first, let’s determine how much natural light you have. Take a piece of white paper and hold your hand about 8 inches above it.”

High Light: You can clearly see the shadow from your hand with some definition.

Medium Light: You will see a blurred shadow.

Low Light: You can’t see a shadow at all.

Here are some low light plants that will grow:

Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen) - only needs fertilizer once or twice a year.

  • Lots of patterns/varieties and colors range from green to pink/red.

Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant): Also thrives outdoors year-round in our region – can add to your deep shade landscape.

  • VERY easy care – great for beginners. Pet safe - nontoxic

Calathea: Uniquely patterned foliage; lots of great varieties: orbifolia, ornate (pink pin stripes), lancifolia (rattlesnake)

  • Likes humidity – good for a bathroom or kitchen (which is where I grow mine). Pet safe - nontoxic

Pothos: Trailing plant can grow up to 10 ft. Easy-care, trailing plant, thrives in nearly any condition; great for beginners

  • Lots of varieties: ‘Cebu Blue’ (collector’s item), ‘Golden’, ‘Neon’, ‘Marble Queen’, ‘Pearls & Jade’, ‘Silver’

Sansevieria (Snake Plant / Mother in Laws Tongue): Deep green foliage with a striped edge and gray-green markings and 6 inches to 12 feet tall.

  • Extremely easy to care for

English Ivy: English ivy can spread as a ground cover outdoors, but as a low-light indoor plant, it simply offers a beautiful trailing effect of small and dainty green leaves.

  • Be sure to mist the plant to maintain adequate humidity, and keep it in a cool room at night, if possible, ideally around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant climbs and spreads as much as possible it can needy.

Lucky Bamboo: Grown in either water or soil, lucky bamboo plants are suitable plants for offices and homes. They often have sculptural or braided stalks dotted with little green leaves.
  • An important element of feng shui practice, lucky bamboo plants are said to bring good luck and fortune, especially if the plants were received as gifts. Plant loves partial shade to full shade. Mature Size ranges up to five feet tall, and 1 to 2 feet wide (indoors). The plant is low maintenance.

ZZ Plant (rhymes with easy): The ZZ plant is a low-maintenance houseplant that can technically survive even without natural sunlight.
  • Can tolerate drought well and should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Its mature size is 2 to 4 feet tall and wide. This Plant is very low maintenance.

Corn Plant:
Corn plants produce thick canes, or stems, from which long, narrow upright leaves grow.

  • They are popular houseplants and can reach about six feet tall indoors. These plants shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight, which can wilt and burn the leaves. This plant is low maintenance.
