Natural Disaster Tips from the Better Business Bureau

After the disaster, 7 tips to help you make an insurance claim

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As clean up continues for those hardest hit by Helene - today we are joined by the Better Business Bureau, Juliana O’Rork to talk tips to help you make an insurance claim, after disaster strikes.

As Hurricane Helene ripped through Western North Carolina and surrounding areas, many individuals and families are experiencing devastating damage because of strong winds, storm surge, rip currents and flooding. “The Better Business Bureau is providing tips for what to do after a damaging storm, how to make an insurance claim, how to deal with mold and how to find your pet after a natural disaster” says O’Rork. She adds “also included is a list of BBB Accredited Charities supporting hurricane relief efforts on our website.”

The Better Business Bureau offers the following seven tips when dealing with insurance after a disaster strikes:

  • Contact your insurance company immediately.
  • Beware of contractors who claim to be insurance claim specialists.
  • Document the damage to your property and possessions thoroughly.
  • Make any temporary repairs to limit further damage to your home or business.
  • Do not make any permanent repairs until you get approval from your insurance company.
  • Do not hand over an insurance check to a contractor for repairs prior to work being started.
  • You may qualify for additional assistance when insurance doesn't cover all of your losses.
