Obesity is one of the top health threats pets face. With a recent survey showing around 60% of dogs and cats are overweight or obese. Co-stars of 'Critter Fixers: Country Vets' on Nat Geo Wild, veterinarians, Doctor Vernard Hodges and Doctor Terrence Ferguson joined Charlotte Today to help.

“Obesity in pets is a growing problem and many pet owners don’t realize their pets are overweight” says Dr. Hodges. “Even one extra pound can impact pets’ energy and overall wellness.” says Dr. Ferguson. He adds “ that’s why proactive weight management is key for their health.”

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, in the U.S., 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were classified as overweight in 2022, making obesity the No. 1 health threat for pets.  Dr. Ferguson says “that’s why we’ve hooked up with Hills Pet Nutrition to combat this problem.”

Obesity in pets can cause serious health risk like diabetes, heart disease, joint issues and more. So, how can you tell that your pet is overweight?  Firstly, your pet may look just fine to you, but the ideal weight varies by size and breed. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you if your pet is overweight.

Signs that your pet may be overweight include:

Loss of an obvious waist

Collar needs loosening

Slow movement.

“That’s why we are proponents of the LOVE test” says Dr. Ferguson.  This is a great way for pet owners to tell if their pet is overweight.

L is for Locate – Locate your pets ribs, you should be able to feel them, if you cannot it’s a sign that your pet may be getting obese.

O is for Observe - Observe from the top down if your pet has a little waist that narrows or a big waist. If your pet waist is bigger your pet may be overweight.

V is for Visualize - Visualize your pet from the side and see if they have a pudgy round body type, if so they may be overweight.

E is for Evaluate – Evaluate your pets diet and how much they are being fed. You may have to cut back on serving or change their diet entirely.

“We believe that science is the best path to giving your pet the best care possible.” says Hodges. He adds “trends come and go, but our nutritional philosophy is that science leads the way, creating food that stays a step ahead for your pet’s best life.”  Feed your pet a food formulated to help them reach a healthy weight from Hill’s.
