CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Today we were joined by Wells Fargo Championship Tournament Director, Gary Sobba to talk about a huge announcement and accomplishment that's really going to impact the community of Charlotte as a whole.
Sobba telling us: “I am so excited to announce that we’ve had one of our most successful tournaments recently, that has allowed us to give over $2.5M dollars to over a 100 local charities." Sobba adds: “since 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship Tournament has raised over $30 million dollars and raised awareness about numerous charitable foundations in Charlotte, Wilmington, and the Washington DC area" He tells us "we are also proud of our Reading Champs program that targets every second grader in getting them a book and a swag bag as they move onto the third grade. We need and have a number of volunteers to make our efforts come to life. In many ways volunteerism is the heart and soul of PGA TOUR events and our volunteers handle everything from childcare, security and even some healthcare.”
Joining Sobba on air, was Kelly Cates from Promising Pages, to talk to about the partnership the organizations share, and discuss the profound impact they have on the community - with events like the current Booktoberfest. WCNC Charlotte is also a proud partner with Booktoberfest.
Promising Pages, Booktoberfest is a month-long community-wide book drive to collect new & donated books for under-resourced children. “The impact is tremendous over 60K+ children will receive books throughout the year” says Cates. She adds “Last year Promising Pages collected 35K books and right now our biggest need is picture books and early chapter books. Our goal is to help remove literacy barriers and increase book access for under-resourced families, schools and child-serving organizations.”
