How Goodwill helps people in the Carolinas

Ahead of the "Goodwill Day of Giving," WCNC's Larry Sprinkle looks at the multiple ways in which Goodwill provides assistance for people in the Carolinas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lives are changed every day inside the doors of the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, located on Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte.

The campus is one example of the many benefits that Goodwill of the Southern Piedmont continually provides to members of our local community.

Through its training division, Goodwill University, special job training courses are designed to help people develop skills that are necessary to start, or even change, a career. All of the courses are offered free of charge.

The items people donate to Goodwill provides the merchandise to stock the stores and, in turn, are offered for sale at a bargain price. Whenever you shop at any of the 31 Goodwill stores across an 18-county area, those purchases allow individuals to improve their lives through special, customized “no-charge” instruction. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

The building has 160,000 sq. ft. of space and is the home of local partners who are there as part of the many services offered by Goodwill. Among those partners are Skyla Credit Union, Charlotte Community Health Clinic, Common Wealth Charlotte, and the Center for Community Transitions.

Goodwill itself creates jobs for people in our community. Annually, they employ more than 1,200 people. In the past year, Goodwill assisted 7,700 individuals with resources and support. Once again, all of that is possible through donations and purchases.

WCNC has teamed up with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont for the "Goodwill Day of Giving" on Saturday, April 29th. The Goodwill Day of Giving is where the public is asked to give generously as they donate many items in their possession to help their community.
