YORK, S.C. — It's the talk of the town. York, South Carolina is “lined with silver!"
With a silver glow from the aluminum exteriors, downtown York is lined with airstream travel trailers. It is part of the seventh annual “Silver in the City" event. Owners and their airstream trailers come from all over the United States and Canada to take part in the weekend event.
Many of the town's 8,500 residents gladly welcomes the visitors and their classic American travel trailers. Each side of Congress Street and two parking lots are completely filled with the airstreams.
Terry Montgomery and John Leake are the founders of the big weekend celebration. They said the city of York actually has traffic closed on Congress Street throughout the weekend.
A police-escorted parade staring the airstream trailers havs become a big part of the “lined with silver weekend." Both Montgomery and Leake say there are a lot of repeat participants who come back every year.
Among the dozens of trailers on Congress Street is a huge, three-axel airstream that was bought by the original owner in 1993. There are three different travel trailers from the 1960s that are also part of the event this year.
The single axle models have four lengths between 16 to 22 feet. People who drive sport utility vehicles and small trucks find the trailers easy to tow especially in crowded downtown areas.
