CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Queens University of Charlotte will officially welcome Hannah Aspden back to Charlotte and the Queens community in a small ceremony following her Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games performance.
Editor's Note: The attached video aired at an earlier date.
She's Queens University's first athlete to ever win gold at either the Olympics or Paralympics, making history for the school.
Aspden competed in the Paralympic Games for the second time in her career, as she competed at the games in Rio, bringing home two bronze medals at the age of 16.
She was the youngest U.S. swimmer to earn an Olympic or Paralympic medal at that time.
Aspden returned this time with two gold medals after winning the 110-meter backstroke S9 individually and, helping her relay team capture gold in the 4x100m medley relay with 34 points.
She will receive a proclamation from the office of the Mayor of Charlotte, presented by Councilman Larken Egleston.
Aspden has been a member of the six-time national champion Queens women’s swimming team since the 2018-19 season.
The Royals will take to the water at home for the first time this season following the event as they host UNC-Chapel Hill at 6 p.m. in the Levine Aquatic Center.
