'The voters got it right' | Reya, a 12-year-old pit bull, elected new Dog Mayor of Mooresville

Reya is Mooresville's fourth Dog Mayor.

MOORESBORO, N.C. — Mooresville has a new dog in charge, and she's ready to serve her constituents!

On Wednesday, the Mooresville Youth Council announced that the town has a new dog in charge. Reya, a 12-year-old pit bull, was elected to serve as Mooresville's new Dog Mayor. Reya's term officially began on June 30 and will last one year.

Each year, MYC accepts nominations for the position and then they hold a vote where residents and followers pick their favorite candidate for Dog Mayor.

This is a direct voting process, so the dogs don't have to worry about an electoral college. Plus, it's a public campaign, so the dogs don't have to spend all their time pounding the pavement to raise campaign funds.

The job of the Mooresville Dog Mayor is very important. They are involved in all kinds of events and activities during their tenure.

“I have had a chance to meet Reya on a couple of occasions and she is a wonderful addition to our Town,” Mayor Chris Carney said. “The voters got it right and she'll do a great job! I'm excited to work with her over the next year.”

Reya's owner Ashley Potts said that her new role came at the perfect time.

“We lost Reya’s fur brother, Rufio, in March due to bladder cancer,” said Ashley Potts. “We’re thankful for the Mooresville Youth Council for this yearly tradition. It came at the perfect time for our little family!”

Reya has also dealt with her own medical issues, having undergone two knee surgeries, skin disease and the removal of a dew claw due to a bone infection.

What a tough lady!
