Charlotte is the 10th-rudest city in America, study finds

The most common rude behaviors researchers observed were a lack of self-awareness, talking on speakerphone in public and being loud in shared spaces.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte likes to brag about its Southern hospitality and charm, but a new study claims the Queen City is actually one of the rudest cities in the country.

Researchers from Preply considered everything from playing music too loud instead of using headphones to a lack of self-awareness when walking down a grocery aisle. Researchers found the most common rude behaviors are a general lack of self-awareness, talking on speakerphone in public (you know who you are) and being loud in shared spaces.

Overall, Charlotte was ranked No. 10 overall, beating New York City and Los Angeles. Miami came in at No. 1 on the study, bless their hearts. Philadelphia and Tampa, Florida, rounded out the top three rudest cities.

On the other end of the scale, Omaha, Nebraska, was rated as the city with the least rude residents in 2024. Minneapolis, San Diego, Columbus, Ohio, and Kansas City were the top 5 nicest cities. Raleigh was No. 9.

WCNC Charlotte viewers were split on the subject, with some people saying the researchers nailed it, while others think they might've just run into the wrong transplants when conducting the study.

"Most of the people in Charlotte are very rude," one viewer said, while another chimed in saying, "Yep, especially on the roads."

"I live in Charlotte now and am from Miami," another person said. "I'm proudly no tone of those rude people and I love Charlotte! The Queen City still has Southern hospitality!"
