'We were happy here' | A High Point family of 7 is without a home and 5 pets are dead after a house fire

High Point Fire deems the home uninhabitable after a fire started in the kitchen.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A High Point mother is speaking about the traumatizing moments her home caught on fire.

Flames consumed Ashley Brown's home on Giles Street Monday.

The family of seven was able to get out, but five dogs died in the fire.

Brown said she's been renting her home for a year and living with her family.

"Being back here, it hurts. We were happy here and our animals were happy here," she recalled.

Brown said she's thankful everyone made it out safe, she said her mother woke her up in a panic after smelling burning plastic in the kitchen.

"To get out of the house, I had to rely on her yelling that the door was open.  I was screaming 'mom open up the door, I can't see open up the door!'" Brown said.

Brown said the rest was a blur, all while eight-months pregnant. She said she grabbed her children while fighting smoke and maneuvering around the flames to escape.

"I had my two-year-old on my hip and I had to drag my three-year-old behind me because I could not see. I did not want to leave him behind," Brown shared.

She said this home was suppose to be a kickstart to financial freedom for her family, but now she has to start over.

"We moved here to plan to save money to buy us a house.. we lost everything," Brown said.

High Point Fire said the fire started in the kitchen and is accidental.

The Red Cross is currently helping the family by putting them up in a hotel.
