CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friday, Feb. 9 is National Pizza Day, and whether you prefer deep dish, this crust or something in between, there's no shortage of tasty options across the Charlotte area.
Pizza is one of America's most beloved meals and nearly 17% of all U.S. restaurants are pizzerias. But who has the best pizza in Charlotte? It's a touchy subject for many, much like the heated barbecue debate that's divided North Carolinians for generations.
"Best pizza in Charlotte? Nowhere," one viewer wrote. "And whoever said Pizza Hut deserves to get smacked. Go to NY - you will have 'real' pizza."
See what we mean? Pizza is a very sensitive subject. Just the mention of deep dish in certain company could lead to a fight, especially if Jon Stewart's around.
WCNC Charlotte asked our viewers to give their thoughts on the best pizza in the Queen City and you didn't disappoint. We received recommendations from all corners of the city and across the metro.
Hawthorne's NY Pizza was the most popular choice, with the Charlotte-based chain getting several votes. Hawthorne's has recently expanded, adding locations in Mooresville, Harrisburg and Concord to go along with multiple Charlotte restaurants, including the original location on 7th Street.
One person said their favorite is Lorenzo's in south Charlotte, saying it's the closest thing they've found to authentic New York-style pizza.
