Plans for one Whataburger in Charlotte have already been approved. Plans for another one may not be far off

The possibility of another location after one was just approved is now being floated according to zoning documents.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It hasn't even been a month since plans for the first Whataburger restaurant in Charlotte were approved, and it appears there may be movement on another location already.

Zoning records reviewed by WCNC Charlotte show that an application could soon be submitted for a site along Sunset Road in north Charlotte, just off the exit from Interstate 77. The proposed scope of the project suggests the plot would be completely scraped and rebuilt for the Whataburger, which would be about 2,800 square feet after construction. It would also feature a double-lane drive-thru and parking.

Charlotte-based architecture firm BL Companies is listed as the key applicant for the building, while a limited liability corporation using the Sunset Road address in its name is listed as the owner, with an email tied to Charlotte-based Landmark Development Partners listed too. Whataburger itself is listed as the financially responsible party, with its headquarters in San Antonio, Texas listed in the permit details.

So far, plans for this location haven't solidified; the permit details online show the parties involved wish to hold a conceptual meeting with Charlotte city staff.

Foodies who crave the Texas-based chain's menu of burgers, chicken, shakes, and even breakfast items like taquitos have been patiently waiting for Whataburger to come to the Queen City. Similar steps were taken in 2022 for a possible location on South Boulevard, but those plans never materialized. Plans for the location along Albemarle Road in east Charlotte were filed in August 2023 and greenlit in March 2024.

The larger chain of restaurants is not related to the local What-A-Burger restaurants found in Concord, Kannapolis and Mooresville.
