CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Christmas came early for a Charlotte veteran, as he received a new roof on his home Thursday.
Robert Steele, an Army veteran who served during the Korean War, was given a new roof from Canopy Roof & Restoration as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project.
"I feel good, very good. Joyful," Steele said. "One of the most blessed days of my life is today."
Steele said he'd been needing home repairs for several years and was grateful to get a new roof at his east Charlotte home. He was selected and approved as the recipient of a roof replacement through a partnership between Owens Corning and Purple Heart Homes.
"I think it's very, very important to support veterans and their families when they're truly in need," Steele said. "Today they're proving it by working together to keep a roof over this veteran's head."
The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project is a nationwide effort to honor veterans who served and the families that supported them. More than 500 military members have gotten new roofs since the program was launched in 2016.
"I appreciate it very much," Steele said. "I want to thank the VA for helping me accomplish this. I want to thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you."
