GOLD HILL, N.C. — A Beagle mix named Jackson is getting lots of love after a scary fall into a mineshaft in Gold Hill.
On Saturday, Jackson fell into a 20-ft unmarked mineshaft in someone's backyard. The Gold Hill Volunteer Fire Department and other Rowan County rescue squads worked together to rescue Jackson from the bottom of the mineshaft.
Since there are special certifications required in order to descend into mineshaft holes, the fire department called in highly certified rescuers, who entered the hole off of Old Beatties Ford Road. Other Rowan County rescue squads also responded.
Everyone got out of the mineshaft safely and Jackson is doing fine and was reunited with his owner.
"Great teamwork today for all the rescuers involved. Thanks to all the departments that came out to help rescue this lucky dog," the Gold Hill Fire Department said in a statement.
A nineteenth-century gold mining town, Gold Hill is home to an abundance of gold mines, leftover from the Charlotte-area gold rush. According to the Historic Gold Hill and Mines Foundation, Gold Hill is also home to two of the most famous gold mines in the entire southeast.
Because of the area's rich history, there are unmarked gold mines that extend hundreds of miles. The mines sometimes open up spontaneously, which appears to be how Jackson ended up at the bottom of a mineshaft.
The community's heartwarming response to rescue Jackson is truly inspirational.
