MATTHEWS, N.C. — Some Charlotte area high school students are helping another student's dream come true.
Students in the David W. Butler High School Student Government Association came together to raise $10,000 for 8-year-old Maura's Make-A-Wish dream of visiting Hawaii.
Students learned about Maura, who is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and they dedicated themselves to fundraising so they could make Maura's wish come true.
“The first year into it the chemo is very hard and there are days where she doesn’t want to keep going," Maura's mom Mary Gilson said. "So, opportunities like this are what gives them hope. Hope for the future, hope to keep going. Seeing young people giving back and learning at such a young age to do good it’s really heartwarming."
The school and community came together on Friday to surprise Maura with a parade and "tropical tacky tourist-themed" pep rally, where they announced her Make-A-Wish grant.
