Good boy! Union County K9 reunited non-verbal child with family

Bloodhound Remi did a reverse track, helping the child get back home safely, the sheriff said.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. โ€” A Union County K9 is getting extra belly rubs after he reunited a non-verbal child with his family after he was found walking alone over the weekend.

Deputies responded to a 911 call about a child walking along Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road alone. When deputies arrived, they began trying to find out where the boy lived but weren't able to effectively communicate with him because he has autism and is non-verbal.

Deputy Belk and his bloodhound sidekick Remi, then attempted a difficult and uncommon "reverse" K-9 track starting at the location where the boy was found, hoping it would lead them back to his home.

Remi picked up the child's scent and started tracking along the path he was walking. They eventually wound up at the boy's home, which was about a half-mile away in a nearby neighborhood.

The boy was reunited with his family. Deputies didn't file any charges after learning the child secretly left the house without alerting his parents.
