CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Airlines donated more than 150 bicycles to students ahead of the holiday break, delivering the bikes to students at Joseph W. Grier Academy in northeast Charlotte Monday.
Pilots with the airline were on hand for the delivery of the toys as part of the airline's partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to ensure students get the supplies they need.
Students at the school got to pick their new bikes and ride them during Monday's event.
American Airlines' donation comes on the heels of WCNC Charlotte's Magical Toy Drive. WCNC Charlotte and the Salvation Army teamed up to collect thousands of toys for families in need across the Charlotte area. More than 2,400 bags were packed with toys for children of all ages this holiday season.
"We are so honored that the community puts their trust and faith in us from the families that come to us that put their children on the angel tree, and they trust us to provide for that," Major Jason Burns, area commander for the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte, said.
The Salvation Army needs more volunteers at their Christmas Center. More information on how you can volunteer can be found on the Salvation Army's website.
