Charlotte real estate developer helping families build generational wealth through equity

James Scruggs is doing more than just building up and out.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — James Scruggs is building off the cornerstone of his life and faith to create a sustainable impact in helping families develop generational wealth through equity.

The name of his nonprofit matches the direction that James Scruggs is moving in: Ascension.

Kingdom Development Partners CEO James Scruggs says after losing $30,000 in the stock market in the early 2000s, that failure set him up for the success of today.

"I went out and bought 20 single-family homes in one year and another 10 the next year," Scruggs said about his determination to make it in real estate. "That's how I started."

After righting the ship and assembling some high-profile mentors, like Hugh McColl, Scruggs launched his real estate business intending to always pay it forward.

That's why Ascension was created.

The organization has a focus on finding pockets of land to build developments that coincide with the socio-economic background of the people who need to live there. It's more than just owning a home through.

Scruggs wants to implement a tax grant, homebuying, maintenance, and financial literacy programs. He wants to care for the whole of a person or family.

"We want the value of the community to go up but not the taxes to go up for those people in our attainable homes that they no longer can afford to live there," Scruggs said. "We don't want them making decisions to survive but to thrive!"
