CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Muralist Georgie Nakima's work can be spotted throughout the city of Charlotte. Her murals feature vibrant colors and geometric shapes to celebrate Black culture and heritage.
"I want to create work that unifies us as a people," Nakima said.
Nakima studied biology and chemistry at Winston-Salem State University, but her focus soon shifted.
"I could see my calling really was art," she said.
Now her murals are getting national attention, as her work can be seen from California to Rhode Island.
"I'm trying to bring heritage and representation to the forefront of my work," she said.
The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Uptown Charlotte will feature an exhibition of Nakima's work this summer.
