CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A recent Forbes report broke down ways businesses can not only celebrate Black History Month, but also provide more inclusive work environments after February is over.
WCNC Charlotte is breaking down three of those measures.
The first measure to keep in mind is creating a safe space. The Forbes report says the way to do this is to explore conversations and learn what's important to employees.
The second measure is reframing the conversation. The article suggests employers should shift from talking only about a monthlong celebration to a commitment of ongoing recognition.
Finally, the third measure is acknowledging that any commitment to that ongoing experience requires sensitivity.
For example, Forbes cites the Pew Research Center to identify some of today's challenges specifically impacting Black workers, including discrimination, how Black workers are treated on the job, and pay equity.
An ongoing commitment also requires research and understanding, which is why Forbes went on to advise employers look for the data. The report encouraged resources like the Center for American Progress, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and even your own internal employee resource groups.
It's all to take a deeper dive into what both employers and employees can do to create equity at work.
