A Forbes report says the average woman earns 82 cents for every $1 a man earns, adding this disparity is even greater for women of color.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This Black History Month, WCNC Charlotte is taking a closer look into the issues impacting Black Americans not only throughout history, but to this day. One of those issues is the wage gap.

The wage gap refers to differences in income by demographic.

A Forbes report says the average woman earns 82 cents for every $1 a man earns, adding this disparity is even greater for women of color: Forbes' statistics found Black women earn 60 cents on that dollar, and Latinas earn 55 cents for every dollar that white, non-Hispanic men earn.

Forbes also noted these statistics can get worse depending on where you are. Black women and women of color are among the lowest-paid workers specifically in rural areas, according to this data.

The report shared a long list of reasons these disparities exist, with causes ranging from factors like discrimination at work, age, working hours, and parenthood.
