MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — The holiday season is wrapping up, and it's now time for people with real Christmas trees to dispose of them properly. The city of Charlotte makes it easy to do just that with regular trash and yard waste collection.
Natural Christmas tree collection begins on Jan. 1. All you have to do is put the tree out on the curb like you would for regular trash collection. It's important to make sure all lights and decorations have been removed from the tree. That includes tinsel, ornaments, fake snow and the tree stand. It seems obvious, but it might be your first time getting rid of a natural tree.
If you are getting rid of an artificial tree, the process is pretty simple. only instead of leaving it by the curb, you'll need to schedule a bulky waste collection. All wreaths are considered bulky, even natural ones. This is due to the wiring inside the wreaths that help them keep their shape while on display.
Charlotte residents can schedule a pickup by calling 311.
City of Concord officials say Christmas trees — live ones — are considered yard waste. They will be collected on the same day as normal trash. Simply put them on the curb without decorations by 6 a.m. on trash day and they'll be picked up by the city.
The town of Mooresville will collect Christmas trees at the curb on normal yard waste days, which is typically the day after garbage collection. All decorations and lights must be removed prior to placing the tree at the curb.
In York County, South Carolina, live Christmas trees are accepted for recycling through Jan. 31 at several recycling centers in the county, listed online.
