Employees at Gaston County shelter having to take animals home to avoid euthanizing

Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement at full capacity.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — An animal shelter is full -- out of kennels. That's the reality for the shelter that takes in all of Gaston Counties strays and owner surrenders.

"We are an open intake facility, which means anything that comes to us we do take that," Karrie Brotzman, the facilities adoption coordinator explained.

Brotzman published a post on Facebook begging people to step up and help.

As we enter the Summer months, this overcrowding issue tends to get worse. As it is, they are already completely full.

"It's a real concern," Brotzman said. "It's more prominent this time of year because everything is having puppies and kittens, and animals are more active and found loose more."

To help reverse the trend, there are several ways to help. The facility asks that everyone try to be a part of the solution. Small actions turn into big results.

WAYS TO HELP:

  1. Share their Facebook page
  2. Purchase items on the shelter's Amazon Wishlist
  3. Sign up to become a volunteer.
  4. Sign up to become a foster parent.

Hours for volunteer dog-walking and adoption are the same: Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shelter asks that anyone interested arrives at least 30 minutes prior to closing.
