CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Many holiday shoppers will buy big ticket items like video games and appliances. Often, the store selling those products offers an option to buy the extended warranty.
But, should you buy it?
According to NerdWallet, you might not need to pay for an extra service plan because certain credit cards might have similar coverage.
First, check to see if your credit card offers the coverage, since some offer up to a year of additional coverage on eligible purchases.
Keep in mind, Nerdwallet noted computers and cars are generally excluded. However, something like a dishwasher or video game console will likely be covered.
If you do decide to buy the retailer's extended warranty, it can be pricey, anywhere from $20 to over $125, depending on the item.
WCNC Charlotte is always asking "where's the money?" If you need help, reach out to WCNC Charlotte by emailing money@wcnc.com.
Whether it's through your credit card or from the store, make sure to save the original receipt and the product's warranty documentation. If you end up having to file a claim, the warranty manager may request more documents, like a repair quote.
One final note -- If you're asked to ship the item to the manufacturer, it will often be on your own dime, a considerable cost if the product is big or heavy.
