'Super Jude' ready to celebrate 2nd birthday

When Jude Peters was born, doctors told his mother he'd be lucky to live two weeks. On Sunday, he'll celebrate his second birthday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jude Peters wears clothes, like his Superman t-shirt, meant for someone around 3-months-old.

But when he was born, even living three months was a long shot.

"They prepared us that Jude might not be compatible with life outside the womb," said his mother Hannah Peters.

Peters says through the pregnancy, doctors knew Jude wasn't growing properly. They told her he'd weigh three pounds and probably wouldn't cry when he was born. But Jude proved them wrong, weighing six pounds and making his voice heard.

"They held him up in the air so I could see him and we always say it was a warrior cry," Peters said. "He really let out a warrior cry."

After a couple of days he was diagnosed with Type 1 RCDP, an extreme form of dwarfism that causes respiratory problems and shortening of the bones in his arms and legs.

"When you first start learning about RCDP it's really scary," Peters said. "You get on google and google tells you to say goodbye."

Still, she held out hope. She says the disease is so rare that less than 100 kids worldwide have it. Peters connected with some of their families and realized that doctors in Delaware are doing extensive research and close to finding a cure.

"This is what we've been searching for," Peters said. "This is what we've been praying for, because it's really hard watching your child go through pain."

Peters was told that Jude would live for two weeks. Sunday, he turns two years old. The Chipotle on North Tryon Street near UNCC is holding a fundraising event from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"50-percent of everything they make that day will go toward research for RCDP," Peters said.

While "Super Jude" has his struggles and limitations, he continues to beat the odds. He's been an inspiration to people around the world who send him tons of letters and fan mail.

"Really amazing to see all the support and we couldn't do it without Jude's tribe," Peters said. "That's what we call them. They really are there every step of the way."
