CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s just a matter of time before a cold snap hits and likely sticks around through the winter months. So what are some ways to save money on heating your home this season?
One of the best ways to improve efficacy is to is make sure you are changing all the necessary filters. Every 30 days will keep the furnace running smoothly. Clogged and dirty filters will make it work harder.
The other suggestion? Drop your thermostat and put on a sweatshirt.
“The single best tip is to drop the temperature in your house a bit. Of course to a comfortable standard for you and your family. That will save you a little all winter long,” Duke Energy spokesperson Meghan Miles said.
The Department of Energy recommendation for a home thermostat is 68 degrees during the day and cooler at night. Making that slight adjustment will save you about 10% on a yearly energy bill.
