Putting grocery curbside pickup to the test: Harris Teeter vs Walmart

Don't have time to hit the aisles inside the grocery store? No need to fear, you can simply point, click and shop from the comfort of home or work with curbside pickup options.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Don't have time to hit the aisles inside the grocery store? No need to fear, you can simply point, click and shop from the comfort of home or work with curbside pickup options.

In round two of our grocery wars food fight, NBC Charlotte put online grocery ordering with curbside pickup to the test.

Larry Sprinkle and Rachel Rollar chose Harris Teeter and Walmart for this test, and like the delivery challenge, the rules were simple. Pick 10 items, order them and go pick them up at the store.

With Harris Teeter, there are great selections across the board and checkout was super easy. We were even able to use our VIC card for a slight discount on sale items. There was a $4.95 fee for pickup, but that fee is waived for first-time customers.

With Walmart, the choices were less numerous. Checkout was extremely simple and the retailer even offers what they call a "select express" option, which allows you to pick up your order in one hour at participating stores. There is a catch, though, because to use it, you have to spend at least $30.

So, who came out on top? Walmart was cheaper, but only by 17 cents. An employee carried our order to the car and helped pack them inside the trunk. Everything was accounted for and they threw in a goody bag.

Harris Teeter, as mentioned above, was 17 cents more expensive. The items were packed perfectly, delivered to the car and in great shape when they were unloaded.

So for this one, there is no clear winner. Both stores made the entire process as easy as possible with the click of a mouse.
