Over 150 Charlotte-based Walmart employees to be laid off, report shows

The news comes about a month after Walmart announced it would lay off and relocate hundreds of corporate employees to its headquarters in Arkansas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Walmart will lay off more than 150 employees in Charlotte, documents from the North Carolina Department of Commerce showed. 

The jobs appear to be based out of a Walmart corporate office in southwest Charlotte. The news comes about a month after Walmart announced plans to lay off and relocate hundreds of corporate employees nationwide. The layoffs will take effect on Sept. 20, the document shows. 

A Walmart spokesperson issued the following statement to WCNC Charlotte: 

"We are eliminating some roles supporting our associate call center in Charlotte to better align our team with the volume of requests. We have had discussions with associates who were directly affected and are working closely to help them navigate the path forward, including other opportunities within Walmart."

The goal is to build up Walmart's new corporate headquarters in Arkansas, with the company asking employees working remotely in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto were asked to relocate, according to CNBC. The nearly 350-acre campus will include 12 office buildings, parking lots, a hotel and other amenities.
