CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is getting more money to buy body cameras and stun guns. Charlotte City Council voted unanimously to approve roughly $4 million in funds at city council's Monday meeting.
City officials said approximately 1,750 stun guns need to be replaced, as the current stun guns will be unsupported in Fiscal Year 2023.
Officials said the new body cameras approved through a contract with Axon Enterprise Inc. will have a lifespan of five years and will have better video and audio quality.
As part of the vote, the city manager was authorized to renew the contract for up to five, one-year terms with possible price adjustments for each contract. Additionally, the city manager was authorized to purchase additional software licenses, support and more to maintain the system while it's in use.
