CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It's only been a week since NBA All-Star Weekend wrapped up and Charlotte is already gearing up for another major sporting event.
The 2019 CIAA Tournament tips off Monday, February 25 and is expected to bring millions of dollars to Charlotte. Both the men's and women's tournaments will be held in Charlotte with Bojangles' Coliseum and Spectrum Center hosting games.
Hundreds of businesses are ready to make a lot of money and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police will be working overtime to keep everyone safe during the event. This year's tournament marks the 14th straight year the CIAA has crowned its champions in Charlotte.
And even though the CIAA announced its tournament will be moving to Baltimore in 2021, everything is in place for the tournament to have a lasting impact on Charlotte.
"It supports our hospitality industry and the one-in-nine employees that work in the industry," said one Charlotte official.
We're talking everything from hotels to restaurants and venues for parties and receptions that will take place across the Charlotte area. Officials expect more than 100,000 people to visit the Queen City for CIAA-related events.
As for security, CMPD Chief Kerr Putney is confident his team will keep things under control.
"I am always amazed at the work we do, staying on top of people," Putney said.
