4 ways to save money on flights

We’re still in the summer season but now’s the time you should start booking flights for the winter holidays.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s tough to think about Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the middle of summer, but according to the experts at AARP, now’s the time to book winter travel if you want to get the best prices on tickets.

If you’ve been to the airport recently, you know travel is back in full swing. While more and more people are catching flights, staffing shortages and fewer flights scheduled are just some factors leading to pretty pricey airfares. While fares are less expensive now than they were a year ago, according to the latest numbers from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, no one wants to pay more than they have to.

Here are four ways to save on flights according to AARP:

1. Be flexible

Pick times and dates that aren't as popular to get the most bang for your buck. AARP recommends Tuesday and Wednesday as the best days to fly in the U.S. For European travel, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday typically provide better prices.

2. Book early

It’s no secret buying at the last minute will cost more, but just how far in advance should you purchase airfares? AARP says the best time to book is 134 to 320 days ahead of your preferred travel dates. That means now is the time to start planning those winter holiday trips, and possibly even next summer!

3. Sign up for deals

Get alerts when airlines offer discounts so you can take advantage of the deals. AARP recommends signing up for individual airline alerts, price monitoring services and airline rewards clubs to get the most savings.

4. Be loyal

There are definite perks to flying the same airline. The biggest, of course, is the rewards system. When you continually book the same airline, you'll earn those rewards quicker than if you use different carriers.
