CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you’re planning an end-of-the-summer getaway, you’re more than likely booking a hotel.
The problem is, scammers are lurking online hoping to separate you from your hard-earned money. The Better Business Bureau has received multiple reports on its BBB Scam Tracker from people claiming that they’ve been duped when booking a hotel.
So what can you do to protect yourself? Here are the do’s and don’ts of booking a hotel according to the Better Business Bureau:
- Don’t be fooled by fake look-a-like websites designed to trick you. Always look closely at the URL to make sure you’re booking on a legitimate site.
- Do verify the site is secure before entering payment information. Check to make sure the website starts with "https://" and includes a padlock icon.
- Don’t assume a website is legitimate just because it tops your online search results. Scammers can pay to have an ad sponsored so that it’s among the first options included in search results.
- Do your research. Check online reviews and scam reports before booking. Be certain a business is trustworthy before you share any personal information.
