Here are 10 simple ways to save money

From buying refurbished technology to unplugging everything, following these strategies can keep more cash in your wallet.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Saving money can seem like an impossible feat. From food prices to electricity costs; just about everything is more expensive these days. That’s why it’s so important to save where possible. Here are 10 small ways to save money, according to AARP:

Use gasoline apps

Even though the cost of gasoline has decreased, you want to make sure you’re getting the best price regardless. Download free gas price tracking apps to locate the cheapest option near you.

Install motion sensors

Keep electricity costs down by automatically turning off lights, fans, and any other electrical devices when you leave a room.

Unplug everything

If you’re not using it, unplug it! Every little bit helps when it comes to keeping home energy costs low.

Call your credit card company

The only way to get interest rates lowered or a reduction in annual fees is to ask.

Avoid crowds

Travel off-season to save big on hotels during non-peak months.

Go generic

Switching your prescriptions from brand name to generic could mean major savings. Make sure you’re not paying more than you have to for a drug that has a generic option available.

Order groceries online

This may seem counterproductive because product prices online could be more expensive than in-store prices, however, shopping for groceries online can help you stick to only buying what you need while avoiding in-store impulse buys.

Cut back on food waste

Create a designated spot in your refrigerator for food that needs to be eaten first before it spoils and ends up in the trash.

Buy refurbished

Whether it's phones, computers, televisions or other electronics, make sure to shop manufacturer websites for revamped products before you buy new ones.

Keep windows covered

Get blackout curtains to block the sun in the summer and to keep the hot air inside of your home during the winter.
